Last week was a pretty exciting time for Razer and certainly for Razerguy himself. Razer was one of the main sponsors of the World Cyber Games (WCG) US qualifier event. Held in the heart of New York city at the Manhattan Center, the event was chronicled by more of the main stream press than we have seen at any event. This is a good thing for gaming in general, and as I have written before getting the word out to as many non-gamers is crucial to the long-term success of gamer in general and more specifically, pro gaming.
Not everyone agrees with our viewpoint and that is okay because controversy spurs thought and discussion. For example Sports Illustrated said, “As nearly 200 video game players gathered in New York City last week for the U.S. finals of the World Cyber Games, a bold — and highly dubious — prediction was ventured by Robert Krakoff, the president of Razer, a gaming peripherals company: "You’ll see these kids on a box of Wheaties one day." Krakoff believes that top gamers have as much of a right to be called athletes as the poker players or bass fishermen on ESPN.” (this URL is longer than the quote?):
Full article here. (opens in new window)
Okay, so I’m “dubious” … the point is that non-gamers are being made aware of gaming as a “sport”, plus there are many positive stories about gamers and the games we are playing to help dispel some of the myths and misperceptions from the past.
At the WCG event I was invited to be a part of a press conference and given the platform to talk to over 40 press and online writers about what I see as the future of gaming. I thought that you might find my comments anywhere from interesting to provocative. So here they are …
The Future of Gaming … transcript from Robert Krakoff’s speech, September 7, 2005, World Cyber Games, New York City.
Gaming is a relatively new pop-culture phenomenon and in the last 10 years it has replaced the movie industry in overall entertainment sales.
What will become of gaming over the next ten years?

As an active sponsor of LANs, teams, events, leagues and world tours over the last 7 years I believe that I’m in a good position to look into the crystal ball toward the near future … and from where Razer views the gaming industry there is much good news.
First let’s look at events like the World Cyber Gamers. I predict that as more and more players, fans, parents and press are exposed to professionally run events that these will be acknowledged as true family entertainment. Gaming when staged properly is as great a spectator sport as tennis, golf or the X-games. Gaming just requires more exposure to reach that status.
Next let’s look at the world of gaming from a geographic standpoint. Korea’s national news coverage and enthusiasm for gaming is considered an anomaly by today’s standards. But imagine the future with 30 to 50 countries having this same passion? This is already happening in China, Brazil, Argentina and Eastern Europe. Longer established countries like Germany, Canada and all of Scandinavia are actively producing another new generation of star gamers and fanatics.
Next let’s look at sponsors … yes, companies like Samsung, Intel, NVIDIA and Razer. We are the current and original sponsors who years ago recognized the value of supporting the grassroots of gaming. Next will be the Fortune 500 corporate sponsors like Coke and Pepsi, Ford and Toyota, Kellogg’s and General Foods, Burger King and MacDonald’s … trust me, they are all coming to the party.
What will bring them into this strange new land you ask? The gamer generation has already grown larger and broader than the marketers current wet dream darling, the baby boomer generation. Unlike the Boomers the gamer generation has a true generation gap. They have their own “’leet” language … they don’t watch or respond to traditional advertising messages or mediums. They don’t trust marketers or believe their hype. In short the next wave of corporate sponsors will be forced to overcome their pop-culture fears and join the party, one-by-one.
The biggest change in the next ten years will be how and when network television will cover gaming as a cyber sport. Oh, this will happen and when it does their will be another major gaming revolution. This will be a healthy revolution, whereby large numbers of 35+ non-gamers will be exposed in mass to the world of competitive gaming and they finally get it. Old misinformation and unsupported fears that gaming is too violent or leads to violent behavior will be exposed as so much misinformation. In the future more parents will encourage their children to emulate professional gamers much as they do other celebrity athletes. And yet another wave or generation of super-gamers will be born.
At that time their will be another wave of game developers with new and more expansive ideas and concepts for future gaming. Windows Vista OS will be a huge leap forward toward advancing the growth and acceptance of mainstream gaming. Microsoft’s goal is to treat the launch of Vista like the launch of a major console, with gotta-have-it games optimized for this new OS through DirectX 10.
Following the launch of Vista will be another wave of product engineers to deliver even newer and better systems for component development. Games will become even more interactive and immersive and will be available cross-platform. There will be more merging of the personal computer and the console. Consoles will become more interactive and players will become more involved and compete more effectively online and in live events. Look at the support and vision that the WCG has exemplified in the area of console gaming support.
With television coverage and corporate sponsors’ prize money and the number of major gaming events will grow. There will be regular tours of major cities. Fans and families will turn out in droves to cheer their local teams. Players and teams will become celebrities and endorse products beyond the gaming world.
Gamers will become organized, have rules and rights while other event organizers will strive to meet the standards of the WCG. There will be fallout of those event organizers who can’t provide the proper support of the players and provide a professional entertainment vehicle to the fans.
Gamers will become schooled in the art of the media, to become entertaining, interesting and often provocative. They will have press agents, managers and entourages. Image and personality will transcend the geek icon often portrayed by the media. Gamers will become interactive rock stars.
I can see a day where teams and individual players are sponsored by large corporate sponsors much like they have attached their names to major sports stadiums. The players within these teams will travel to other cities and countries and have rock star status. Those of you who haven’t been around gaming long will have a hard time buying or at least visualizing this new world. To those of you I say ten years ago would you have expected to be here today to cover what is ostensibly a major qualifier event for the super bowl of gaming? Or would you have been able to predict the success of the X-Games?
I could talk about this to anyone who would listen for hours but time and good taste prevents me from prattling on. After the dust of the future has settled two constants will remain … the WCG will be one of the leading purveyors of great gaming entertainment and Razer will continue to support the community with sponsorships and leading edge products. I certainly welcome other points of view, questions and challenges to my thesis. I have in the past been accused of being a soapbox orator, and I can accept that title since this perch provides a better view of the gaming world as it passes.
Thank you for inviting me and for the opportunity to address this austere group of involved professionals. I’m really looking forward to this great event.

I couldn’t tell…were the gamers at the WCG using Copperhead mice? The one mouse I can see clearly doesn’t look like one…but ENOUGH about mice…I’d like to discuss your views on what you see for the next few years for gaming. When do you think we’ll approach photorealism in games? I think it’s a lot sooner than most people think. HL2 could be considered the equivalent of the first ‘X-Man’ of games, a Revolution in the evolution of games. And what of virtual reality? Within the next 10 years we’ll have the capability of turning anything we can dream up into a virtual world simply by thinking it up, and that’s coming directly from Ray Kurzweil! OK, so he didn’t say those EXACT words, but, still…
September 21st, 2005 at 2:25 pm
You mean some of the projections like, “Computer displays built into eyeglasses are also used. These specialized glasses allow users to see the normal visual environment, while creating a virtual image that appears to hover in front of the viewer. The virtual images are created by a tiny laser built into the glasses that projects the images directly onto the user’s retinas.”
I’m not sure if I agree that virtual thought will be mainstream computing in 10 years, however the military has been testing this for some time. Beyond that my crystal ball begins to cloud over.

The Age of Spiritual Machines: “When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence” by Ray Kurzweil
Penguin paperback $14.95
September 21st, 2005 at 3:02 pm
That’s exactly what I was referring to! Man, you’re good! Well, speaking of Ray, I’ve noticed that since his original forecasts from ‘99 to his updated version released in 2001, to his Updated updated projections from his new book, he keeps moving the Singularity closer and closer. We are a speceis that Seriously underestimates our full potential. We’ve already made a rudimentary game that can read minds(or more accurately, measure concentration), an implant that gives basic functionality of operating a computer to a quadriplegic, and another ‘implant’ that helps a paraplegic to walk. They’re attempting to map the entire brain out, right down to the individual neurons, in an attempt to emulate intelligence from its source. Personally, I think they’re going to fail miserably, but it will be an important step forward in learning how the brain functions. Once we can harness the full power of reading minds(Look out! Here come the lawyers!) then we will be able to tap into the brain directly, and create a two-way stream. We’re not as far off as we all think….
September 21st, 2005 at 3:06 pm
Razerguy, get his new book, “The Singularity Is Near : When Humans Transcend Biology” $17.65 amazon.com.
Out tomorrow. Man, I’m gonna be spending WAY too much money this week…
September 21st, 2005 at 3:15 pm
I agree with you that the future is much closer than we think, however if history is any indicator singularity as a mass consumer product is more than 10 years away. I guess I should have qualified my crystal ball in reference to technology that’s available to the masses. Just wait until the government gets a hold of this … could be stalled in the courts for decades.
September 21st, 2005 at 4:34 pm
Well, as Ray likes to say, and I’m sure he says it over and over in Singularity, Technology is not slowed down by the courts. An example he likes to use is stem cell research. Even though there was mountains of opposition to it, it pressed on, and is now going stronger than ever. If the courts try to tie it up, technology has a way of finding a way around. Stem cell research is now proceeding with almost 0% of embryonic stem cells being used. And especially after the Singularity, it won’t matter how much money you have, it’ll only be a year at the longest before everyone on the planet has access to a nanofactory that can produce food, fuel, clothes, purify water, basically anything we will ever need. And how Ray describes it, it sounds like we won’t need most of that stuff after the singularity…but you’re right. It is at least 20 years away. Until then, we’ll keep using Razer mice.
September 21st, 2005 at 6:59 pm
Very enjoyable read. Love the comments you made. I can’t wait for a day like that myself when gaming is recognized as a good thing and no longer shrouded by the myth of violent behavior that the media portrays, and also when gamers are no longer stereotyped in the way they are today. And I do believe you’re right, this day will come, especially with the help of professionally ran events such as this.
Bravo!!
September 23rd, 2005 at 4:09 pm
Boy this blog is dead…gotta liven things up a bit…Alrighty!!! THREE days to release! I am officially initiating Countdown to RCR: Razer Copperhead Release! You know, this’d be a lot easier if I had an exact time(*wink wink*), like 9/25/05 12:00AM PST… BUT all I have is the 26th. Oh, well. Gotta make do. From now until the 26th, I’ll be updating the (projected) release date and time from as close as I can hypothesize… And my first projection is: 9/26/05 06:00 PST. SO from this point in time that’s….81 hours. You know a counter on the main page would be Really cool….and more accurate….

September 24th, 2005 at 1:15 am
Hi. I’m eagerly anticipating the Copperhead’s release and was severely disappointed when I read a review over at GameSpot a mere few days ago that listed it as being released 8/29/05. I quickly checked sites like BestBuy.com and couldn’t find it. So I went out to stores like CompUSA, Circuit City, etc. and inquired in person to no success as I was told it wasn’t out yet, and if it was, they didn’t get it yet. So my question is why would GS print a release date when it’s obviously not the real deal and WHEN is it being released? I don’t need an exact time, but in the ball park would be helpful. Thanks.
September 24th, 2005 at 10:15 am

YeeeeeaaahhhNO. But….at present there is……54 hours.
September 24th, 2005 at 5:20 pm
Correction: The time remaining is 60 hours. Sorry for the miscalculation.
September 25th, 2005 at 2:22 pm
Not very effective, though, when my posts take over 24 hours to be approved by a moderator….
September 25th, 2005 at 7:22 pm
Closer ever closer, of course I think I’ll stick with my Plasma LE for a while longer anyways
Here’s another question for your “crystal ball”, what do you think the chances of any college gaming teams will be (I’m talking with support along the lines of football, baketball, etc.). Will it be more than 10 years, or less?
September 26th, 2005 at 12:56 am
I see its available to buy now, but $79 plus more for shipping and tax its probably around $90 eek thats a little steep. I thought it would be around $60.
September 26th, 2005 at 8:46 am
make that 48 hours…in any case, are you KIDDING me??? OK, OK, it was my fault for not staying up till 12:00AM and ordering them the SECOND they were released…but I REALLY hope I don’t have to wait another 2 weeks for you to get another shipment in…
September 26th, 2005 at 3:27 pm
well, dont buy it from the razer website. A lot of places are selling for 69.90, and some include free shipping. Thats like 17 dollars off from the razer website.
September 26th, 2005 at 3:54 pm
where?? where?? I’ve been looking all over….razer needs to redeem themselves in my eyes…and if there’s other places selling it, then that will placate me….
September 26th, 2005 at 4:14 pm
Wow, now that you mention it BIG DOG, I didn’t even notice the page had the “out of stock” message… granted, I still placed my order at dead midnight (central time zone) as soon as I noticed it was available in the store, so I hope my order managed to process before the stock ran out… I have to admit, I knew this mouse would be a definite hit, but I didn’t imagine they’d be out of stock so soon after being released. (O_O)
September 26th, 2005 at 5:54 pm
Well, one of two things happened: Razer ROYALLY underestimated the demand for their mouse, OR they’ve put it as out of stock Simply to create more buzz…I don’t believe they’re out of stock either, but they probably saw the number of orders that came in at midnight and said, “we can’t keep this up.” Personally, I think razer’s just plain stupid for not having a pre-order option. That would’ve given them a MUCH better idea about how many mice to order initially….but then, that would’ve just been too easy…
September 26th, 2005 at 6:30 pm
Can someone answer my question???
September 26th, 2005 at 6:31 pm
We knew that the demand would be high, however you should know that any new technology product takes time to ramp up production. We have product coming every week for the rest of the year and everyone will get theirs if they can be patient.
September 26th, 2005 at 6:39 pm
Razer does everything in its power to meet our targeted dates. We originally met with Gamespot on August 4 and at that time our goal was to ship the first products on August 28. The delays were due to quality assurance testing .. more notably a couple of graphic card conflicts. We needed to write new firmware updates. This is slow due to this being a new product for us. Delays are a part of this business and while we don’t like them we will never release a product that we know has any problems, even if those problems only apply to 5% of our customers.
The firmware has been updated and we are now manufacturing Copperheads for delivery. As I mentioned above, we will be receiving shipments every week for the remainder of the year. Thank you all for your patience and support.
September 26th, 2005 at 10:20 pm
So let me get this straight, the next shipment of mice will be arriving exactly one week from now (October 3rd 2005). Is there is anyway that the shipment will come anytime this week?
September 27th, 2005 at 12:38 am
All right, thank you. I’m not complaining or anything, just curious when it was coming out. I’m used to delays with games and such, but I’d rather have a product that was tweaked and fine tuned as much as possible than something shipped faulty and full of bugs.
September 27th, 2005 at 8:48 am
oh and I almost forgot, are you going to be releasing the blue color later or was it just not in the shipment that you recieved?
September 27th, 2005 at 10:43 am
I was just looking at the specs on the new mouse. What does the 32KB Onboard Memory Powered by Razer Synapse do for the mouse play?
September 27th, 2005 at 11:23 am
Store user profile for the mouse.
September 27th, 2005 at 1:54 pm
September 27th, 2005 at 4:59 pm
Interesting….colors And weights coming later…maybe all this is going to work out for the best after all…I hope you don’t hate me too much razerguy! Sometimes I can get very…worked up. But boy, was I looking forward to SmAsHinG everyone at the game club this weekend…oh well, at least I had an excuse to upgrade other parts of my computer
September 27th, 2005 at 6:23 pm
When you buy the copperhead do you get a case that will fit it? or do you have to by the case on the store’s website? And when buying the mouse do you get to select the color?
September 27th, 2005 at 7:49 pm
Sweet, copperhead is enroute to my house… Ungodly levels of anticipation are mounting. Too bad my razermat combo which I ordered a week before hasn’t shipped yet, but I think I’ll manage until it does.
September 27th, 2005 at 8:27 pm
I thought weights and dummy buttons for the side come with it.
September 27th, 2005 at 9:48 pm
Before I stay up untill midnight hitting the refresh button on the razer store I was wondering if you thought the shipment of copperheads would be in tonight. Thanks Razerguy
September 28th, 2005 at 8:30 am
Razerguy, still don’t think we’ll have this technology in every gamer’s home in 5 years??
http://www.nature.com/news/2005/050926/full/050926-5.html
September 28th, 2005 at 4:09 pm
Aww I was fully willing and prepared to buy a razer the second it came out, but apparently it was released during the time I was camping and away from andy and all tachnology.
From reading this I’m beginning to understand the situation, but there are still some things im not understanding. Who, oh why, does the great amazon.com not have the Razer Copperhead? They are the largest online vendor in US and you would think they’d at least have a product page even if they had ran out. I havent’t found the Copperhead at any other sites either. Is Razer the only one recieving and selling the product, or is there just too much of a shortage for 3rd Party stores to sell it?
September 28th, 2005 at 5:18 pm
Lastly, and I’ll say this again, Razer will not rush a product into the market unless we feel it is 100% perfect … no matter how many customers demand it or even if we lose some sales to the dark side.
September 28th, 2005 at 5:37 pm
Oh great, brain wave reading head gear. Its just a matter of time before the Thought Police hardwire this to our skulls.
September 28th, 2005 at 6:21 pm
So do you get the mat and case free or do you have to buy it? And you have the shipment of blue mice, but are testing them for errors? plz respond
September 28th, 2005 at 10:26 pm
yay.. just ordered the Razer Copperhead~
i hope the First Edition doesnt mean “bugged”…
O.o
Razerguy can you clarify the First edition mean?
will there be a second edition, etc that’ll be better than the 1st one?
thanks…
September 29th, 2005 at 12:46 am
i checked the razerzone website today and the mouse was in stock

i ordred them both but now gotta wait for mousepad to come in. razerguy do u know how long it takes to get mousepads in usally
September 29th, 2005 at 2:42 pm
Received my Copperhead in the mail today. I love it. I’m glad I waited and didn’t purchase another mouse.
September 29th, 2005 at 4:29 pm
Hey guys, Do you notice any problems? Some users mentioned that CH have a bug called Movement Lag. And refresh rate checker says it’s not capable of 1000 Hz, even 500 Hz.
Any comments on these problems?
September 29th, 2005 at 5:38 pm
I also purchased the mouse pad with wrist wrest while it was still in stock, but it has been processing for a while. Are you going to ship the mouse and the mouse pad at different times? I would prefer if you just shipped the mouse and then the mouse pad when it was in stock. Is there a way that I can change my order so that it works out that way? Who do I contact?
September 29th, 2005 at 6:38 pm
September 30th, 2005 at 3:43 am
hey i’ve got my CH on 13th September from singapore
does it mean you have a firmware problem with my mouse which i think is the first batch of mouse you mentioned?

September 30th, 2005 at 2:32 pm
Hey Razerguy, reading your article got me thinking a little bit. If video gaming does get recognized as a sport, can you see it possibly making it’s way into schools? Like, say a high school video game team (and I don’t mean student-ran), and eventually get to the point where perhaps schools are competing against each other in the same way they do for other sports such as football and baseball for example. Perhaps that’s thinking really far ahead into the future, but what are your thoughts regarding this? Like for example, how it could evolve schools and students, what it could do regarding youth violence (for example, regarding the discussion in one of your previous entries where I posted an article showing how violence in youths has actually decreased over the years since video games came out, and also in addition to this, allowing kids to engage in a non-contact sport that is also accepted by society and modern school systems), and how could this effect the gaming community for better or for worse? I personally would think it would be cool for video games to be that greatly accepted by society. However, I can’t help but wonder that if it got to that point, would gaming feel the same as it does today? I know a lot of gamers feel a sense of pride within the gaming community for what it is, and it’s hard to say if the feeling would be lost since obviously the gaming world would change forever. Anyway, what are your thoughts about all of this?
September 30th, 2005 at 4:20 pm
You guys should make a forum so we can actually chat and not have to respond back and forth in blog comments.
September 30th, 2005 at 8:28 pm
Sorry Razerguy but we are so excited about this mouse we are kinda freaking out. We are like drug users freaking out for the next hit and if its high quality stuff. You guys ROCK. Just look at this blog. How many other producers of things we like respond to our stupid questions. I know of no other who will respond openly of a product as you do. Thanks for answering my questions.

you guys should make a forum where we all can chat rather than keep responding to this blog comment…
oh btw, kudos on the new annoucement of Razer Mantis mat!!
October 3rd, 2005 at 2:31 pm
The Mantis is coming later this month (October) and you should know that it’s actually two product choices to make:
SPEED model optimizes high sensitivity performance usage
High sensitivity users play first person shooters, action and adventure and most fast-twitch games
CONTROL model is optimized for low sensitivity performance usage
Low sensitivity users play Counter Strike, real-time strategy, MMORPG games and use professional precision applications such as PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.
Both of the models are OVERSIZED Mouse Surface Solution
17” (444mm) x 14” (355mm) x 1/8” (4.3mm)
MSRP $24.99 for either model
October 4th, 2005 at 4:27 pm

Thanks, JF
October 5th, 2005 at 8:55 am
Guys, i have found that in order to get the 1000Hz respond rate, i used a usb clock thing from http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4469 , and to change the rate, restart and start into safe mode and open the hertz checker, run it and it will say change your USB clock speed to 250Hz? type N then it will ask about the 1000Hz polling rate. But mine does work at 1000+Hz. I have a problem with the buttons on the left side of the mouse, when i click the “forward” button it sometimes activates the “back” button at the same time which isn’t too fun depending on what i have bound to that.
October 5th, 2005 at 2:43 pm
To razerguy:
I just bought a copperhead, i have a quick question about the duratability of the teflon feet. I was just checking out the mouse, and I noticed that the white teflon pads on the bottom of the mouse seems to wiggle. Im just wondering, if the teflon pads fall off, how can they be replaced? Thanks.
October 5th, 2005 at 6:26 pm
Mike, I’ll go ahead and answer that:
Just e-mail Razer’s tech-support, I forgot the address, but you can find it, and give them your Mouse’s model number, the serial number, tell them you want replacement teflon “feet” and give them your mailing address, and they’ll send you a new set of them completely free of charge, that’s how it happened with me at least, when I lost my back Diamondback pad after applying an LED mod to my mouse.

October 8th, 2005 at 11:37 am
yay.. just got the Razer Copperhead first edition
i hope the First Edition doesnt mean “bugged”…
I saw one at the store that did not have the words First Edition on it… Is mine special?
Razerguy can you clarify the First edition mean?
will there be a second edition, etc that’ll be better than the 1st one?
thanks…
October 10th, 2005 at 1:04 am
question on the progress of drivers.
i have noticed a few things such as implementing the key funtion.
for example if i set side button to “F” and press down on it, it will not keep “F” held down even when i hold the button down.
I tried the 6.16 beta which address this. The problem is resolved, how ever a new problem occurs, which basically i cant Left click while im holding the side button down! Basically i cant shoot my weapon, when im priming my grenade lol!
Also will more macro features be implemented? IF would be nice to add “left click” into the macro. SO for starcraft for example, i can macro “1″+ “S” + left click” which basically does a hotkey comstat scan for me.
October 11th, 2005 at 10:22 pm
Plz answer my question, it has been burning inside me. What is the meaning of the “First Edition” text on my mouse when all others dont have it. Is mine defected/Special in a bad sort of way? I know other people that have the same mouse without the text…
Plz respond

The first edition simply means its a First Edition, as in the first batch. Like first editions of a book, its prestige and desirable, like an athlete’s rookie card.
