Tarantula: Truths and Lies |
|
| November 8th, 2006 |
Ah forums, one of my favorite topics. Contrary to some of the recent forum posts, we did not rush this product out to the stores. There is support for drivers and service available via telephone in North America or online through Razerzone to anyone.
The exact same units that we are selling in stores are being reviewed by "professional" people and winning awards (CNET just gave the Tarantula an Editor’s Award today).
New technology products often take a few weeks to work out any potential system conflicts we can’t test for because some components are so new. This is why we make products that allow firmware updating.

The Tarantula has been actively in development for over 2 years. Gamers ask us what we are working on and because we love input we share more information than we probably should from time to time. Then some of you get pissed off because we don’t hit your dream dates? Well, you can’t have it both ways. Razer will ship products when we believe they are ready - not before. We will continue to "communicate" with the gamers who want to know what’s coming. We will continue to seek outside innovation in the form of testing and validating our products.
If you are the type of gamer who prefers the standard design and development of copycat OEM product manufacturers that is your prerogative; but if you are the type of gamer who is looking for an edge in their game then read the reviews, read the hype, talk to your friends and make your own intelligent decision.
Bling-bling
Perhaps you are all missing the point of why we opted for anti-ghosting vs. a lot of bling lighting. We wanted to build the ultimate gaming keyboard and in doing so we placed more emphasis on key binds (chording as many keys as you have fingers), key touch, perfect resistance, lowest possible key latency, quiet keys, etc., etc.
Until you have actually used this keyboard there is no way to compare it to anything else you have ever used.
Because of the anti-ghosting feature every key works on an independent mechanical switch. This makes a great deal of backlighting impossible. We realize that gamers like to play with only the ambient light from their monitor and hardware and therefore we added as much lighting as we possibly could. The BattleLight is a direct lighting tool that will be available as soon as we can get the quality levels perfected and will cast a soft light on the keyboard. It is not a perfect solution for lighting but when I weight the benefits of a very advanced keyboard that allows me enhanced game play and amazing programmability the lighting trade-off is easy to swallow.

“Ah forums, one of my favorite topics. Contrary to some of the recent forum posts, we did not rush this product out to the stores.”
So is this a hintch to the fact that it seems the HABU mouse was released too early and with a lot of bugs like the Copperhead was?
I believe that many people would like to have Razer come out with a statement to why it seems that the HABU is sufferingfrom the same premature bugs that the copperhead were.
With regards

is there a way to increase macro key strokes to higher than 8? Some times ppl need macros to type a sentence, or more complex binds.

November 25th, 2006 at 6:06 am
I took a picture for those who are interested in the german layout of the tarantula: http://home.arcor.de/katjaundmike/pics/tarantula_de_layout.JPG
November 26th, 2006 at 8:29 am
Will there be key layouts for any other languages than english.. Im sitting here in small denmark waiting for a version with “ÆØÅ” on it… Also i havent been able to locate a dealer of the english version in denmark. So i cant even get that one..

Just curious: I’ve seen in the Microsoft Games For Windows website (http://www.gamesforwindows.com/hardware/keyboardsAndMice.aspx) that Microsoft is co-branding this keyboard (Microsoft - Razer Tarantula). Is this correct?
November 29th, 2006 at 8:02 pm
Alex, you’re misreading the website, because if Microsoft is co-branding the Tarantula, they’d be co-branding Logitech’s G15 as well. Not to mention if you look in the other Hardware tabs on that page, they offer all kinds of brands from Dell to Voodoo.
November 30th, 2006 at 3:40 pm
Amp, sorry, but I think you are the one that’s misreading the website. Obviously I’m not saying that every product mentioned in that site is being co-branded by Microsoft. But, if you pay a little bit more attention, you will realize that every product title in this site follows the standard “Manufacturer - Product name”. So, for the Logitech mouse, the product title is “Logitech - G15″. For the Dell gaming PC, the title is “Dell - XPS”.
And for the Tarantula keyboard, the title is “Microsoft - Razer Tarantula”.

December 2nd, 2006 at 1:32 pm
Alex, sorry, I missed that, yeah.
But yeah, Microsoft was only involved with Razer to make the Habu, as stated by Razerguy.
Seems like the Games for Windows site could actually use a going over by someone who knows what they’re doing. Mistaking the Tarantula for a Microsoft/Razer Co-Brand, misspelling Logitech, etc.
Anyway, an unrelated question to Razerguy: Are the drastic apparent similarities between the DeathAdder and Habu intentional?

i couldn’t seem to get the razer tarantula anywhere on the web currently for a bargain price. The best way is thru Buy.com as they hv 30 dollar off for using Google checkout, but it’s sold out. same as other website. the only place i could find it circuit city, ebay for over 100 a piece, more expensive than retail price. Where and when it’s going to available again? Please produce more. This keyboard is really amazing~~!~

Bought a Tarantula late last month. Just got around to installing it. After unplugging my Eclypse (USB type) and plugging in the Tarantula, I noticed on boot post the Tarantula was not identified as a keyboard, rather a USB hub.
Several e-mails and a call to Razer yielded no effective help. I was sent an e-mail telling me to send it to New york for a replacement.
Curiosity got the best of me. I cruised back to the retailer and bought a second Tarantula. I got the exact same results from the second.
I’ve tried both keyboards of four different computers, each of which have USB keyboards. All four rigs have ASUS mobo’s.
What gives? And yes, I’ve tried Enabling Legacy Support, and flashing BIOS’s.

I have had to return the 2 Razer Tarantula keyboards recently purchased due to compatibilty issues with EA Games products and UBISOFT games.
Tech support for Razer could not anwer any of my questions just as EA Games could not. However, UBISOFT was direct and to the point advising me this keyboard was not recommended for use in any of the Ravenshield games.
Here’s the response from EA Games (I thought some of you may get a kick out of this guy’s moronic contradicting anwer): Hello,
Thank you for contacting us here at Electronic Arts Technical Support. Thank you for your keen interest in the game. We have no information on that. Though we did checked it and we really couldn’t guarantee the games performance and stability on this keyboard. This wasn’t really tested in the game, so it’s hard to tell. Basically the game was developed to run on a standard keyboard and mouse other than this is unsupported.
Should you require further assistance about this or any Electronic Arts games in the future please visit our website and review our extensive Self Help knowledgebase http://support.ea.com/

I just spent the last forty minutes writing a first impression of the Tarantula. The site said, “Bad security code — Press Back button,” and happily ate the post. grrr…
Should I write it again? Does anyone actually care?

Hi!
Thx for all replies! Pls execuse my bad english…my german is much better
In the hardware manual is written plug your usb 2.0 devices into the hub….but it*s only usb 1.1! Why ?? The Sleep button is without function, but power managment is activatetd
Will there be a firmware- driverupdate to make the Drivers more convenient? for example ability to freely assign any file or website or whatever to the Makrokeys? Why do these Makrokeys not have the perfect antighosting ability? If i wannt to use them ingame its only possible while not pressing any other button, thats not the best way for such an expansive keyboard. Buy the way the keyboard is highly recomenndable, beside these little things to fix

Hi,
I have one question about the Razer i have read tons of review but no one answered it :/
I am an Oldstyle Cursor key gamer… i can’t use the G15 or eclipse II as they dont support 3 key presses with the Cursor Keys.
Can someone who has the keyboard for from Razer just tell me can with this kbd i press
Forward Arrow
Left Arrow or Right Arrow
Num Pad 0
please for the love of god, also does razer not have any forums where the customers can discuss or is this blog it?
thanks

razer guy i would like to know what’s wrong with my tarantula keyboard. It seems that it keeps on rebooting and it forgets its programmed macro keys. It’s really frustrating and i have to reinstall the drivers for them to work again. Then the same problem will occur.Do you know what’s the problem?I’ve downloaded the latest driver and firmware.

Hi guys! I just purchased the Tarantula and the Barracuda!!! WOW!!!
Both of these rock, and have enhanced my gaming experience!!
Two quick comments:
1) When is the battlelight going to be released (any date yet?), because I would like to get one NOW…lol
2) Can you guys work on a slightly longer and maybe more flexible mic for the Barracuda??? The mic is rigid and only hits me about mid jaw, but unlike my bluetooth I have to speak very loudly for the Barracuda to register my deep voice. I was just thinking a longer mic that might be able to be bent up towards the corner of the mouth would make this awesome headset even better.
Otherwise, keep up the great work!!!!

May 4th, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Just purchased my Tarantula about a week ago and definately worth the price of admission. The bling bling backlighting on my Saitek Eclipse was nice, but the feel of keys, responsiveness and keysounds all far outweigh this. I just have two issues:
1. I’m really looking forward to alternate keysets (which I hope will be FAIRLY priced, they are just chunks of plastic after all and we paid enough premium for our high end keyboard as it is) and battledock items, though moreso the keys. A Unreal Tournament set would be brilliant. This isn’t really an issue, but just something I want more of.
2. Macro’s are relatively small, and a bit slow. I wish the macro’s could be sped up and increased in length, essentially.
That is all.

I have an issue where using my Diamondback LE on 64-bit Vista Home Premium, once i have drivers loaded for the mouse (from razerzone.com) pressing my middle mouse wheel to activate Ventrilo is now ONLY recognized when focus is on the desktop. If any other window or application has focus then the button press is NOT recognized.
The only reason i was able to have middle mouse wheel 3 set as my push to talk option for Vent is because i set it up before getting mouse drivers.
PLEASE help!

I have a trust keyboard , ten euros worth. It registers every keystroke I make. It doesnt lag when I press more than one key, it doesnt release the key before I lift my finger and I dont have to pound the keys to get a response in the first place. It doesnt have a headphone port built in, but if it did, im sure trust would have the good sense to shield it from interference from the keyboards internal workings. And that is why I have returned the tarantula I bought, it was outclassed by a keyboard a tenth its cost.
You really did a great job on the looks and the marketing though. Put another two years into the mechanics and you’ll have a great keyboard.
this is my personal opinion/experience of your product and hopefully more personal experiences published on sites should help to balance up what is in my opinion an overmarketed product which fails to deliver. your comments please.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:28 am
If you feel it registers keystrokes as instantly as a Tarantula then by all means, stick with a 10 euro keyboard. I’m not going to make an ass of myself and act all “LOL NOOB IF U HAD SK1LLZ U’D NOTICE” because that’s just not true.
Hell, I’m not even a particularly skilled gamer (on any PC game, anyway), though I do notice a faster response time on the Tarantula. I’m the kind of gamer who is anal about input lag - I use a fast response monitor and all of my peripherals have ultrapolling. Anything less feels unresponsive and hard to use. But then, that’s who the Tarantula was built for - gamers anal about response times. If you don’t notice it, then I’m actually going to congratulate you - you’re one of the lucky ones. Why? Because you saved £60.

Do something for me, hannz or anyone else with a razer tarantula.
Download passmark keyboard test 2.2 and take a screenshot, pop it up on imageshack or flickr or something and post the link.
I didnt know about this software until last night, and I had returned my tarantula by then.
It will show the depress time of the key - the idea is to tap the key quickly as you would while typing. Its an independant test.
Im very curious to see if its any different to any other keyboard. A “normal” board does about 50ms.
June 5th, 2007 at 5:09 pm
Okay, looks like i’m typing this whole thing out again.
So, I did tests like Dundhoone askeed on both my Saitek Eclipse and my Razer Tarantula. The Tarantula came out favourably, though I’m not entirely sure if it proves anything.
Essentially, I did three tests:
1. A general typing test. This involved typing out a sentence and checking the depress time value at the end. I did a few of these and made some screen dumps of some.
2. The ‘Space Bar’ test, where I hit the space bar as fast and light as possible for a minute, trying to find the fastest possible depress time possible for each keyboard.
3. The Macro test. This is more or less an addition to the space bar test - I check to see the fastest response time on the macros on the Tarantula, just to double check the fastest response time.
Results of the general typing test were flakey. To be honest, all they’re really measuring is how long I myself hold on to each of the keys when typing sentences. The overall response rates varied greatly, from 20ms to over 100ms though the average was, as Dundhoome suggested, 40-50ms (roughly) for the Eclipse. The Tarantula on the other hand varied just about as much, though I found I was getting response times within the 30ms range a little more frequently. I put this down to the flatter/lower travel of the Tarantula’s keys over the chunky keys of the Eclipse.
The space bar test was where I found some real answers. After a few minutes on each keyboard, attempting to push the space bar as lightly and quickly as possible, I soon discovered that the minimum depress time on a key for the Tarantula was.. DUM DUM DUM.. 7ms. For the Eclipse however, I couldn’t get it past 15ms after equal time.
Reinforcing the notion of the 7ms on the Tarantula, I got a flickering 7/8ms response time when I hit one of my macro keys on the board, set for b82 (I’m sure you can figure out why that was set yourself.. right?).
The conclusion? Well, there’s far too much focus on my own typing speeds for the typing test to be accurate, but the Space Bar test proved to me that the Tarantula has over double the minimum depress time on each key.
Uh, and that’s about it.
June 5th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
Okay, this blog doesn’t seem to like me posting all those photobucket links. I find this very odd..
Well, just click the link over my name in this post then, it’ll take you to my album. Ignore the other five photos.
dump1, dump2, dump3 are all typing tests for the Tarantula.
dump4macro is the Macro Test for the Tarantula.
dump5space and dump5space2 are Space Bar tests for the Tarantula.
sdump1 and sdump3standard are typing tests for the Eclipse.
sdump2space is the Space Bar test for the Eclipse.
Hopefully this post will work.

i want the battle light before i buy the tarantula, any idea about when it will be released? Thanks
July 5th, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Love the look of the Tarantula and I plan to buy one very soon to complement my Habu… but one question - will it be possible (or is it intended) to include a function in firmware/software that allows you to dim or turn off the backlit LED’s at all? That’s my main concern - I like them, but don’t want them shining 24/7.
July 6th, 2007 at 4:15 pm
is there a way to increase macro key strokes to higher than 8? Some times ppl need macros to type a sentence, or more complex binds.???? PLEASE RESPOND!

I demand a driver update that has support for foobar2000. That’s it. I have bought this otherwise awesome keyboard and that’s all I need to call this perfect.
July 23rd, 2007 at 10:01 pm
d.adder..fantastic
head phones..fantastic
keyboard..fast as hell but layout isn’t merc’s some i’m slower
make the added keys glow but keep letters. how about some pre build layouts for the major games? and a place for freaks to post creations and macros..freaks share the talent.
how about a switch to kill game sounds and let in the marylin manson….pleaseeee
thanks for pushing the envelope for gamers

I am DYING for the Battleight to come out!!! Didn’t it come out today? Or wasn’t it suppossed to? Can someone help a poor guy out here. My Birthday is August 3rd, and I had been hoping to get the light for my B-Day. Ah well D :
August 13th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
I think its very poor that it has taken so long for the battlelight and eye to be released. I spent the extra money when this keyboard came out because of these battle-dock components. Now the keyboard is $50 cheaper and still no sign of battle-dock rippoff products…should have bought a cheap $20 keyboard + $20 web-cam + $10 student lamp than wait for my outdated Razer tarantula to be illuminated by by a guaranteed over priced made in china for 10c light.
August 21st, 2007 at 2:54 pm
yes, your insults on the battlelight is razers fault for not wanting to release a lamp that goes dim in a week or something. great way to motivate people to get what you want
still gonna buy myself a tarantula, the battledock accessories isnt even why i want it, i just love razer and the anti-ghosting is a better feature than people credit it for.
p.s. if you are buying something because it supports something else, its just common sense to wait for both items to be on sale before you buy. bargain bundle anyone?
much respect to razer for great products.
September 1st, 2007 at 10:52 pm
Nicely put. I hadn’t known the Battlelight hadn’t been released yet when I bought the keyboard, but I have the keyboard and I absolutely LOVE it
September 11th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
hey all, i just wrote an extremely long comment but appearantly got the “security code” wrong (idk how, lol). what a waste of time… ok tho… to summaraize i just purchased my tarantula about a week ago and i love it. I was debating between this or the G15 but chose this as it is just a better functioning gaming keybard. I was never really interested in the battledock and it didn’t really sway my descsion at all. However, being that i have it on my keyboard, i might as well make use of it. I was wondering if any other products besides the battlelight and battleeye were going to be released. I suggest some sort of LCD display (like the G15). This display customized to view simple things like date/time or what song is playing. If that fully functional LCD is not an option for whatever reason. I would LOVE razer to make a little clock for the battledock (ie. the battleclock :D). It is ALWAYS a pain to find out what time it is while gaming. I am either forced to minimize, or look across the room at a clock that i don’t have such a good angle at. I realize i can just put a clock on the desk or whatnot, but how much cooler would it be on the keyboard. Of course id rather have the fully functioning LCD like the G15 but if it would cost too much or just be too hard to make at this stage of the tarantula, the clock sures seems like it would be easy to do and im sure would satisfy many people. Please respond. I would really appreciate your comments, especially Razer employees. Thank you.
September 11th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
hey its me again, just want to make something clear. I know that i mentioned the G15 a bunch of times and i really believe that the tarantula is better. If i absolutely needed the LCD i would have gotten the G15. It just seems that this would be a perfect use for the battle dock and would make for a cool and useful accesory (especially if it displays the time). The clock functioning would be my favorite part if this was made so i would love that to be included. Also, being able to see the song name and progress of the track would be quite cool. Thanks again and please reply.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
I’m not saying that this is set in stone that Razer will never look at embedding this into a future product or perhaps a BattleDock accessory however there are no immendiate plans in progress for either at the moment. Thanks for your suggestion thought we will take it into serious consideration as we do with all customer suggestions.
Cheers,
Razerguy
September 17th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
Could we please get an update on the Battlelight? Last info was June 14th, it’s another 3 months. It’s one thing to not have it ready for production at time of release, it’s something else completely to ADVERTISE it on the box, continue to advertise it, and still years later not have the add-on. I have to admit that I was surprised that the keyboard was not completely back-lit, but I have kept it because of the quality of the unit. What I am still waiting for is the light. I have even gone to the extent of buying a cheap $10 USB notebook LED light and plugged it into the USB 1.1 ports (I don’t use them for anything since they aren’t 2.0).
Please keep us informed. To be honest, I think a good show of customer service would be to offer them at a discount or for free to those that have actually requested them as they were promised such a long time ago and were a partial reason for the purchase. At the very least you should have an “available soon” or “in development” on your packaging and not advertise a product that is not available.
September 18th, 2007 at 9:04 pm
hey, thanks for the speedy response. Also, i agree with you 100% about not wanting to look down at the keyboard during gaming. However, it shuold display things not on screen like in the event you are up late and wanna kno what time it is without minimizing ur game, u just look at ur handy dandy LCD on the keyboard. Of couse you wouldn’t put game vital information on the LCD because that would be stupid having to look back and forth constantly. But just a peek at what time it is can be very helpful. Or it can display system properties like cpu usage. idk just a thought (not that helpful, but cool). also, if ur listening to music it can display the song and track info etc. (also not THAT helpful, but cool) Other than that, i agree with you as i would not wana take my eyes of the screen to check how much ammo/ health etc. i have. so yea, just a thought, u didnt really understand me the first time if u thought i wanted a LCD to put the HUD of games. just some more simple info like the date, time, and any other simple things that ppl might want.
thanks again and pls reply
PS. ^^^ i too was wondering about the battlelight or w/e its called. pls tell us some info on that lke where to get it, price, release date, why its not even mentioned on razers site, any info u got
thanks

Hey guys i have purchased the Tarantula keyboard and the DeathAdder mouse and i have 1 issue that i hope you would be able to help me with. When using the headphone/speaker connection on my Tarantula keyboard i get a slight buzz in the speakers. When i connect my speakers to my pc directly it goes away. Is this an issue with all the keyboards or is it just mine. Thanks for any information you can give me.

I would love to have a function for foobar2000. Please, it’s the ultimate music player for geeks!

Hi ppl ! I just bought a Tarantula and I have a question : Is there any key to disable the window key ingame ?
January 14th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
recetly i bought tarantula as a new keyboard, to replace my old generic 101 key logitech board.
i really needed a good board, with good capabilitys, and macro support
had to make a pick between a g15 or tarantula, bought the last one for two reasons, first size (just cant fit a g15 to my sliding keyboard tray) and second it looked better - a truly nice design.
but alas the board dosn’t really confront my needs, why are the macros limited to 8 strokes? a lot of users have pointed this out but nothing has changed.. is it seriously SO IMPOSSIBLE to change this with new drivers?
second thing that is really bothering me is the huge glowing razer logo, i mean, there SHOULD be a way to turn the led off, from the config utility or something .. its just annoying!
and third the gui of the config utility needs some serious makeover, its just not user friendly at all.
i am almost ready to dump this board and go buy a g15 instead, even if i have to buy a new computer desk to fit it!!
razer being a gamer oriented company should atleast hear out what gamers want and needs and make improvements to there products not just IGNORE us.
there have been posted tons of suggestions what should be changed with tarantulas software on various sites like razerblueprints etc.. and last driver update was on may2007 - and it only resoved some driver issues!
atm the buisness model of “lets make something and sell it for a lot of money and hope everyone is pleased with it since its razer and not provide any support for it” is getting the reputation of razer down bad.
WE WANT LONGER&MORE COMPLEXED MACROS!!
June 25th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Hi razerguy, i have a question about the tarantula i just bought. i would like to know does this keyboard keys, words, or alphabet will fading away? thank you and please reply.
